A new study published in the Internet Journal of asthma, allergy and immunology has discovered that the marine oil dietary supplement Lyprinol is effective in the treatment of Asthma in Children.
A total of 71 children aged between 6 to 13 who suffer from moderate asthma were enrolled in a 16-week, single centre, double-masked, placebo-controlled, parallel-group trial and randomly assigned to receive either Lyprinol or a placebo.
It was concluded that after as little as three months of treatment of the oral standardised lipid extract of New Zealand green lipped mussels (Perna canaliculus) that a significant number of participants in the study reported little to no signs of asthma.
The study also concluded that the ingestion of lipid extract is safe for children and recommended a more comprehensive study to further understand the benefits of the lipid extract and how it can be used in other treatments.
While the primary outcome measure failed to reach statistical significance to demonstrate an effect of at least 25% ICS dose reduction, there was a trend to decreased medication used to treat asthma in the Lyprinol group at visits 5, 6 and 7.
It was also discovered that as soon as the treatment was concluded, a reversal of this trend occurred.
Similar findings were also reported in a study conducted by the Hospital Therapeutic Clinic at the Pavlov Medical University. The study conducted at the Pavlov Medical University found that treatment of Volunteers aged 18–56 who had mild-to-moderate atopic asthma reported reduced daytime wheeze and improved morning symptoms of asthma compared to those on the placebo.
Surprisingly, the benefits of the green lipped muscle have been known for many years yet the awareness of this safe and healthy supplement is very low.
The green lipped mussel has been known to reduce inflammation, protect the lining of the gastrointestinal tract, reduce the effects of arthritis, minimise the effects of free radicals and assist with general anti-aging.
The green lipped mussel is also loaded with proteins, omega 3’s, lipids, complex carbohydrates, vitamins, nutrients, and other minerals which make it a super food and a recommended daily supplement.
At the conclusion of the study, it was found that only two children suffered from a side effect. This consisted of generalized itching for one (Lyprinol) and the exacerbation of pre-existing eczema of another (placebo).
The dependence of our children on prescription medicine for the treatment of common ailments such as Asthma is on the rise. Safe, natural and effective alternatives such as the extract of the New Zealand green lipped mussel should form part of every parents arsenal when tackling common ailments such as asthma.
